“Street racing” took on a whole new meaning this weekend in Long Beach probably because the people street racing were celebrities and none of them were speeding away from the police.

About 170,000 people showed up at the 36th Annual Long Beach Grand Prix, which included three days of racing, live music, road food, and annoying local road closures and parking nightmares.

Mark Wahlberg — amateur and Mini Cooper racing ace — nabbed the übercool gig as the weekend’s grand marshal.  Wahlberg’s official duties included giving the official start-of-race order: “Drivers, start your engines!”

Speed racer Patrick “McDreamy” Dempsey qualified and practiced during the week for one of the weekend’s pro events, the World Challenge GTS race, but pulled out at the last minute due to “Grey’s Anatomy” scheduling conflicts.  And by scheduling conflicts, he probably means fear of eminent death or messing up his pretty face.

Brian Austin Green of vintage “BH 90210” fame, and currently best known for banging Meagan Fox, was the top-finishing celeb in the star-studded pro/am race.  Other celebrity drivers were Adrian Brody and fastest-qualifier Zachary Levi, Christian Slater, Patrick Warburton and a scruffy-looking Keanu Reeves (last year’s pro/am winner), as well as funnyman Adam Carolla, teen idol Jesse McCartney, and skateboarding icon Tony Hawk.  Pro Jimmy Vasser finished across the line first.
