Tax and Regulate Initiative: Making Marijuana Legal

medmjdispense Tax and Regulate Initiative: Making Marijuana Legal

Alcohol is sold in grocery stores. Cigarettes are sold at every corner convenience store. To buy marijuana, though, takes a (faked or real) prescription to stay within spitting distance of the law…and the majority of sales still goes on underground.

If that seems unfair to you, then it’s time to speak up. There will be a ballot measure to legalize marijuana in California in the fall of 2010.  This is a very real measure that YOU get to vote on, which depending on your stance, will contribute to the Voting then will be the best chance to have a say.

Until November, though, here are four ways to help you familiarize yourself on the issue.

Know the Issues

Being well informed is the most respectable way to have a point of view.  This November if you’re over 18 and registered to vote to legalize recreational use of marijuana, but do you even know what this means?  The State of California is going bankrupt and looking to incur revenue from taxing the sale of cannabis while also putting the illegal growers and sellers out of business.  If it passes it means adults 21 or older may possess up to an ounce of marijuana for personal use.

Contact your Congressman

Be it health care reform, global warming or the war, reaching out to your representatives in government and bending their ears has been shown to work. The Web site Who Is My Representative? lets you search for addresses and phone numbers for federal representation (House of Representatives, Congress), while Your Legislation will get you in touch with your state representatives.

Join Organizations

The National Organization from the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or NORML, has lobbied for common sense law reform for more than 30 years. It’s a great voice for legalization, and very responsible with donations, which go primarily to legal defense and lobbying.

Don’t Be an Idiot

Movies and television have established a caricature of the average smoker: Consistently stoned, no direction in life and constantly snacking on Cheetos. Don’t be that guy/girl. Don’t smoke up in public parks, don’t smoke and drive, and don’t get stoned and make prank phone calls – yes, my refrigerator is running, but no, I don’t need to chase it. Don’t let your smoking hobby rule your life. The best argument for legalization is that people who smoke contribute to society every bit as much as people who don’t.
