patti R.E.M. Perform with Patti Smith in New Orleans

Music fans got a rare treat this past Saturday, as seasoned rockers [lastfm]R.E.M.[/lastfm] joined punk legend [lastfm]Patti Smith[/lastfm] for an impromptu jam session at Tipitina‘s in New Orleans. Care to know what tunes got played?

Smith played a variety of songs from her early albums, along with covers such as “Be My Baby,” by [lastfm]The Ronettes[/lastfm] and [lastfm]Lou Reed[/lastfm]’s “Perfect Day.”  Things kicked up a notch when Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye brought R.E.M.’s Peter Buck onstage, for a rendition of “Pushin’ too Hard” by [lastfm]the Seeds[/lastfm].

One thing led to another, and before fans knew it Scott McCaughey and Michael Stipe sauntered onstage at the behest of Smith herself, performing [lastfm]Glen Campbell[/lastfm]’s “Wichita Lineman.”

Rolling Stone reports that rather than read lyrics from a song sheet, Stipe called up the words on his handy-dandy iPhone. Both bands joined forces for the closer “People Have the Power,”and everyone went home a happy clam.

R.E.M. has been in town recording their follow up to 2008’s Accelerate since last November at the Music Shed.
