1979’s, Roger Corman produced musical Rock ‘N’ Roll High School, featuring punk pioneers [lastfm]The Ramones[/lastfm] will be released on Blu-Ray May 11–the same day that Christopher Columbus left for his fourth and final trip to the West Indies. Coincidence? Read on to find out.

Believe it or not, there once was a time in this proud country when musicals about teens in high school didn’t feature baby-faced boy-dancers mincing around locker rooms singing about their feelings.

At one point titled “Disco High School,” the campy, anti-authority film offered parts to musicians such as [lastfm]Van Halen[/lastfm], [lastfm]Cheap Trick[/lastfm], and [lastfm]Tom Petty[/lastfm]–who all declined. Luckily, The Ramones stepped in and along with director Allan Arkush, made some goofy, rebellious cinema:
