cbsbyrne David Byrne Gets Political...Sorta

Ex-Talking Heads frontman, solo artist and author [lastfm]David Byrne[/lastfm] has never been shy about speaking his mind. Now, he’s tangling with a sitting governor – though not over policy.

Find out after the jump why Bryne and Gov. Charlie Crist (R-Fla.) are butting heads!

“Road to Nowhere” was one of the [lastfm]Talking Heads[/lastfm] biggest hits during its later years, and has a lot of cache to music fans. Maybe that’s why Crist used the song for a campaign spot – without first clearing it with Byrne.

Byrne, who does not license either [lastfm]Talking Heads[/lastfm] music or his solo work for use in commercials, has sued Crist for $1 million, a number arrived at based on previous offers he’s received.

According to a statement that Byrne gave to Rolling Stone he feels:

I’ve rightly or wrongly assumed that not licensing my songs or Talking Heads songs for use in advertisements is meaningful to both my own sense of integrity and my audience’s sense of who I am and what I stand for.  The personal connection to a song is somewhat severed when it is used in an advertisement, at least that’s my belief. Anyone viewing the ad and hearing me singing would assume that I endorse Crist.

This comes on the heels of a judgment in favor of [lastfm]Don Henley[/lastfm] against California candidate Chuck DeVore and [lastfm]Jackson Browne[/lastfm] suing John McCain in 2008.

Hey politicians: How about you pay for what you use? It is, after all, the law!
