Self proclaimed “legend that the legends wanted to work with,” music producer Phil Spector allowed filmmaker Vikram Jayanti to document the mind behind the musical madman in a rare interview just two weeks before his first court trial for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson.

The documentary The Agony and the Ecstasy of Phil Spector, covers Spector’s influence in music, rough childhood and most importantly, the reasoning behind his wily, crazy person afro he sported in the courtroom.  Clips and more in the words of Phil Spector himself after the jump.

One of the lasting impressions infamous music producer Phil Spector has left etched in our brains is that of a maniacal genius with that Albert Einstein afro he appeared in court with.

He explains in the new documentary The Agony and the Ecstasy of Phil Spector that the hairstyle just an innocent joke that paid tribute to Detroit Pistons basketball player, Ben Wallace.  The gag took four hours to prepare just right and was meant to lighten the mood in the courtroom, but instead sparked up a media frenzy.  Watch Spector discuss the afro phenomenon here.

The documentary is currently screening at New York’s Film Forum and Jayanti comments about the film, “I want the film to be part of the discourse of in the future how Phil is viewed. Not just a footnote of a producer who went to jail for murder, but also as a person who gave a soundtrack to a generation.”
