jerry garcia Jerry Garcia To Be Honored At San Francisco Giants Game

San Francisco sure knows how to throw a memorial party for the fallen leader of the [lastfm]Grateful Dead[/lastfm].  To commemorate the 15 year anniversary of the death of [lastfm]Jerry Garcia[/lastfm], fellow bandmates, friends and relatives are coming out to the Giants game for an impressive night to remember the influential musician.

What do they have planned for the special evening? Well, if you’re headed out to the game, you might wanna bring your kazoo.

Every year since his death in 1995, [lastfm]Jerry Garcia[/lastfm]’s hometown of San Francisco has thrown a special event to honor the lead singer from the jam band [lastfm]Grateful Dead[/lastfm]. For the 15th anniversary this coming August, the celebration may be the most extravagant yet.

At the Giants/Cubs game on August 9th, Garcia’s bandmates [lastfm]Bob Weir[/lastfm] will kick the game off by singing the Nation Anthem and later in the game, drummer [lastfm]Micky Hart[/lastfm] will attempt to orchestrate the world record for the largest kazoo ensemble in a participatory rendition of “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” during the seventh inning stretch.  As if you thought vuvuzelas were the most annoying droning sound during games…

Hardcore Deadheads, make sure to get to the game early for special pre-game performances by Dead tribute bands on the Giants’ field.  Also Garcia’s daughter Annabelle is included in the ceremony to her father by throwing the first pitch.

Sounds like a spectacular night for an influential rocker who inspired generations of musicians and a tasty ice cream flavor. For those of us who can’t make it out to the game, check out Garcia and Weir performing “The Star Spangled Banner” at a 1993 Giants game below.
