It’s a testament to how embedded in our culture the [lastfm]Beach Boys[/lastfm] are that, spelling issues aside, the first thought upon seeing that [lastfm]Katy Perry[/lastfm] released a song called “California Girls” was that she was covering the Boys classic.
That certainly wasn’t the case, but Beach Boy/music genius [lastfm]Brian Wilson[/lastfm], for one, doesn’t mind. Check out what he had to say about the pop starlet’s track after the jump!
“I love her vocal,” Wilson told the Los Angeles Times through his manager on Monday. “She sounds very clear and energetic.”
Energetic, of course, is a good way to describe both Ms. Perry and the [lastfm]Beach Boys[/lastfm] themselves, in different ways. But Wilson liked both Perry’s take on the theme and the verse from rapper [lastfm]Snoop Dogg[/lastfm].
“The melody is infectious, and I’m flattered that [lastfm]Snoop Dogg[/lastfm] used our lyric on the tag,” Wilson said. “I wish them well with this cut.”
Wilson’s well wishes, while kind, might not be needed; the track has sold 2.6 million copies and become the infectious hit of the summer for the top 40 set.
Was [lastfm]Brian Wilson[/lastfm] just being nice? Or is “California Gurls” a worthy successor to the [lastfm]Beach Boys[/lastfm] original?
