Bands like [lastfm]Pearl Jam[/lastfm], [lastfm]Weezer[/lastfm] and [lastfm]R.E.M[/lastfm] may be “the bomb” but they have gathered together to support global nuclear disarmament by backing the anti-nuclear weapon documentary with the appropriately Pynchon-esque title, Countdown To Zero.
Not just some student-produced art-house one-off, Countdown To Zero has a super talented director, a big-time Hollywood producer, and an arsenal of other bands doing PSAs. Blast through the jump with us for the cinematic rules of engagement.
Director Lucy Walker of Devil’s Playground and Blindsight fame and producer Oscar-winner Lawrence Bender of Inglorious Bastards and An Inconvenient Truth are bringing some heavy-duty ammunition to the political playing field.
The film is narrated by actor Gary Oldham and features interviews with Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Tony Blair, Robert McNamara and Pervez Musharraf, and anti-nuclear PSA’s from musical artists such as [lastfm]Trent Reznor[/lastfm], [lastfm]Weezer[/lastfm], [lastfm]R.E.M[/lastfm]., [lastfm]OK Go[/lastfm], [lastfm]Fanfarlo[/lastfm], [lastfm]Jay Electronica[/lastfm],[lastfm] Tom Morello [/lastfm]of [lastfm]Rage Against The Machine[/lastfm], [lastfm]Mayer Hawthorne[/lastfm], [lastfm]the Gossip[/lastfm], [lastfm]Neon Indian[/lastfm], [lastfm]Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zero[/lastfm]s, and [lastfm]Circa Survive[/lastfm].
With the special treat of the [lastfm]Pearl Jam[/lastfm] song “The Fixer” (linked below) over the end credits, Countdown to Zero certainly has a shot at destroying antiquated ideology of nuclear armament.
Countdown to Zero comes out at the end of July.
