jerry garcia Jerry Garcia Biopic In The Works

There’s no question what a huge influence the figure-head of the [lastfm]Grateful Dead[/lastfm], Jerry Garcia, left on music, and filmmakers are bringing his inspiring, larger than life story to the big-screen.

Turning Robert Greenfield’s Dark Star: An Oral Biography on Jerry Garcia into a full on feature film around the singer’s life growing up and his early career, ending just before he joins the [lastfm]Grateful Dead[/lastfm] and won’t feature a lick of the Dead’s music the whole time.

Hmm, who would be a good casting choice to portray the disheveled guitar player? I think this Oscar-winning director should be the top choice…

Director Amir Bar-Lev is bringing the unknown story of Jerry Garcia’s life to the big screen, chronicling only his early life and career as a struggling musician before hitting it big with jam band the [lastfm]Grateful Dead[/lastfm].

“After a certain point, everyone had their own vision of Jerry. This film is about who he really was before people made him what they wanted him to be. I think a lot of that has been lost in the legend and the myth that has grown since his death,” Robert Greenfield comments.

Production for the movie, titled Dark Star, could start as early as next year, and captures the time Garcia playing bluegrass in coffee shops, his first marriage and when he began to use LSD during the acid revolution, influencing the way he played guitar.  Now it’s starting to get interesting!

Since the movie will focus during the period before Garcia joined the Grateful Dead, their music is unlikely to be featured in the movie, opting for a more “bluegrass, folk ballads and jugband music” that was prominent during that time.

The psychedelic biopic is in good hands with Bar-Lev set to direct and Topper Lilien (Dungeons & Dragons) penning the script.  Greenfield commented that Bar-Lev “knows their music. He is a documentary filmmaker. He’s got the right sensibility; he really gets what the piece is about and what Jerry is about. He certainly understands what the Dead were about. He strikes me as a really good choice.”

Now they just need to find someone to portray the psychedelic Santa in the film. Maybe Peter Jackson can step out in front of the camera for his debut acting gig.
