[lastfm]Sweet[/lastfm]’s “Ballroom Blitz” is undeniably one of the most popular singles of rock history, besides breaking top five in the charts in 1973. Fast-forward twenty years and the anthem was reintroduced to Generation X and Y in the ’90s with the movie Wayne’s World.

During the 1970s, the UK band released seven albums in five years, producing some of the most popular, chart-topping rock songs of the decade, with hits such as “Ballroom Blitz”, “Fox on the Run”, “Hellraiser”, “Teenage Rampage” and “Blockbuster”.

Formed in 1968, the original lineup featured vocalist [lastfm]Brian Connolly[/lastfm], bassist/vocalist [lastfm]Steve Priest[/lastfm], drummer [lastfm]Mick Tucker[/lastfm] and guitarist [lastfm]Frank Torpey[/lastfm], who was replaced by [lastfm]Mick Stewart[/lastfm] and, later, [lastfm]Andy Scott[/lastfm].

“Blockbuster” was their first hit in 1973, achieving platinum status in the UK, and giving the band the notoriety to tour extensively.

Sweet’s first self-penned single was “Fox on the Run” in 1975, which topped at number five on Billboard’s singles chart, and reached the number two spot in the UK. “Fox on the Run” also reemerged when it was featured in the 1993 movie Dazed and Confused.

Their 1976 album, Give Us a Wink, attained gold status in the US, and produced another hit with “Action”. In 1978 they released Level Headed, which included the hit single “Love Is Like Oxygen.” In 1979, lead singer Brian Connolly departed, but the remaining members released three more albums before they disbanded in 1981.

Luckily for fans, bassist/vocalist Steve Priest re-birthed [lastfm]Sweet[/lastfm] and went on tour in 2008, enlisting new members, including [lastfm]Stuart Smith[/lastfm], who was trained by [lastfm]Deep Purple[/lastfm]’s guitarist [lastfm]Ritchie Blackmore[/lastfm]. In 2009 they toured all over the US and Canada, which included sold-out shows and performing at the concert industry’s Pollstar Awards. Later in the year, their cover of the Beatles’ “Ticket to Ride” was included in a Fab Four tribute CD, in addition to releasing a greatest hits album called Action: The Sweet Anthology. And now you can catch them at Jack’s Fifth Show!

“Luckily for fans, bassist/vocalist Steve Priest re-birthed Sweet and went on tour in 2008…” er, I think you’l find Andy Scott has been touring with his version of Sweet all over Europe and Oz since about the mid ’80’s!! (and sounds much better IMHO).

    1. Me says:

ha ha ha ha ha….all I can say is WOW, do you have poor taste. Andy’s Sweet, in a word, SUX. And lately, he has not even been appearing with them–just sending them out with a substitute guitarist. You clearly haven’t seen Steve’s Sweet live or there is no way in he-double-hockey sticks you could say this with a straight face.

    2. Brad says:
