The Parents Television Council vs William Shatner— maybe not Shatner himself, but his against his newest CBS sitcom, “S#*! My Dad Says.”
Angry parents are urging advertisers to pull out from sponsoring ads during the show, because they feel the explicit title is inappropriate and offensive. The Parents TV Council President speaks out to CBS and advertisers, saying that including a profane word in a show’s title… is “crossing the line.”
Shatner speaks up about the complaints… using the real word, not the PTC’s “bleep” ing substitute.
I’ve got grandchildren. I brought up three girls. They’ve all got kids. OK? And you say, ‘Boopy-doo-doo, you’ve got to make poo-poo. Come on. Make poo-poo in the toilet. Eventually, poo-poo becomes (bleep). Go take a (bleep), you’ll feel better. You say that to your kids. The word (bleep) is around us. It isn’t a terrible term. It’s a natural function. Why are we pussyfooting?
The PTC sent out 340 letters to companies that frequently purchase ads on the shows network, urging them to boycott purchasing ad space until the show’s title is changed to “Bleep, My Dad Says.” In the letter the PTC President Tim Winter asks advertisers, “When you advertise on television, do you want your customers to associate your product with (bleep)?”
Winter says that not all parents care, but most do… and they are fighting for the majority. “Parents really do care about profanity when their kids are watching TV,” he said.
“All parents? No, but something like 80 or 90 percent of parents. Putting an expletive in the title of a show is crossing new territory, and we can’t allow that to happen on our watch.”
“They may be unrealistic in the world we live in today,” said CBS Network President Henry Schleiff. Adding that the title fits the series “irreverent tone.”
And according to the network, they haven’t experienced any push-back from advertisers since the letters went out. The letters have actually created a buzz around the show… any press is good press right?!
