dumpster pool The New Dumpster Diving

Ever dropped your wallet in the garbage? Or maybe you had a fight with your girlfriend, threw out all the cute, kissy photos you just had to take, and now have to root through the trash to find the pics again because you’re back together (forever this time, for sure)… Whatever the case, it’s pretty safe to say we’ve all done some degree of dumpster diving in our day.

But these divers take it to a brand new level. Curious?

In conjunction with New York City’s third annual Summer Streets program, re-purposed garbage dumpsters will be the newest trend on Park Avenue. These garbage dumpsters won’t have old food, broken furniture, or those pictures of you and your girlfriend- they will be filled with water. Yes, we are talking dumpster swimming pools.

August 7th was the first of three consecutive Saturdays in which Park Avenue will be closed to cars and open to the public for biking, broing out, and now, swimming. With a capacity of 10 people at a time, the 3 brand new dumpster-pools are open to the public for certain hours. And the public came out to give them a test-run: 420 people lined up to take a dip in the 8-by-20 foot, code compliant portable pools.

So, are dumpster pools the “next big thing“? If the next two Saturdays of the Summer Streets program go as well as the last one in NYC, we may all be divin’ in the dumpsters. But in a good way. Unless you thought digging through the trash was actually fun, yuh hobo.
