Todd Phillips secured the rights to John Belushi’s life story and is joining forces with Steven Conrad, the screenwriter of The Pursuit of Happyness, to create a film about the late comedic legend. No surprise… there is already a long line of comedians waiting for the chance to get the role…

This is not the first attempt at a John Belushi biopic. For any of you who don’t know about Belushi and his lifestyle choices… the comedian tragically died in 1982 at the very young age of 33 from a drug overdose. The first film was an adaptation from journalist Bob Woodward’s book “Wired: The Short Life and Fast Times of John Belushi,” in 1989. The book was met with heavy criticism from the late comedians friends and family, who also boycotted the film.

In contrast to the previous attempt, Belushi’s widow, Judith Belushi Pisano, has signed on as the executive producer of the film.

Belushi was one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live in 1975, and is well-known for his roles in Animal House and The Blues Brother’s, where he co-starred with his good friend and fellow comedian Dan Aykroyd. There is no confirmation if the rights have been acquired for all the major players in his life–manager Bernie Brillstein or friends Chevy Chase and Aykroyd.

So far the major names in talk to star as Belushi include Zach Galifianakis, who starred in The Hangover, and Knocked Up actors Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill.
What comedian would you like to see step up and play Belushi in the film?
