Who were [lastfm]John Lennon[/lastfm], [lastfm]Paul McCartney[/lastfm], [lastfm]George Harrison[/lastfm] and [lastfm]Ringo Starr[/lastfm] before Beatlemania struck? Photographer Paul Berriff may not have the answer to that question, but he certainly has some insight to offer fans.

Berriff, a documentary maker who worked as an editorial assistant for the Yorkshire Evening Post when he was 16-years-old, recently found photographs he took of [lastfm]The Beatles[/lastfm] in 1963. He found the negatives of the 38 black-and-white photographs in the attic of his loft.

“When I took those pictures, the Beatles were at the bottom of the bill, but I knew they were going to be successful because they had an aura, and months later they were world famous,” said Berriff.

Of finding the photographs he said:

I started to root around in the attic, because I knew I had taken some pictures of pop groups, but I thought there would only be about five or six of the Beatles. I found this box of about 800 negatives. In it were about 40 shots of the group – I was astounded at the condition they were in considering we have moved house about three times. It was like finding hidden treasure.

Called the “Beatles Hidden Gallery,” the never-before-seen photographs of the foursome rehearsing and relaxing with a smoke, a drink or a snack backstage will be unveiled Tuesday Aug. 24 at Liverpool’s Beatles Story.
