3doorsdown3dd Trends: NASA Space Rocks Greatest Hits

NASA‘s final shuttle flights are just months away, but they’ve launched a very special competition to see the crews off. Space Rock is NASA’s search for a few wake-up anthems for the astronauts during their voyage. The public get to vote for the favorite among previous tracks that have blasted through the shuttle speakers to get the crew out of bed, as well as submit their own tracks for consideration.

Over at Trends‘ Mission Control, they’ve been taking a look at NASA’s list, and now bring you the top ten most popular tracks with listeners.

NASA’s shortlist of 40 is heavy on the pop and rock classics. With everyone from James Brown to John Williams appearing, there’s no doubt that up there in space, noone listens to jazz-fusion.

For a NASA project, it’s heavy on the puns. Train‘s “Drops Of Jupiter” comes in at number ten, while the bottom half of the chart is rounded out by Louis Armstrong‘s gentle classic “What A Wonderful World.

U2 take the number three spot with comeback single “Beautiful Day,” which has reached 534,771 listeners, a little behind John Lennon‘s classic “Imagine,” taking second place with 554,637 listeners.

Out in front though, the Space Rock anthem of choice for listeners, is Metallica‘s anthem “Enter Sandman.” With 4,471,027 scrobbles from 579,196 listeners it doesn’t just have the most listeners, but is also the most played track in the top ten.

As the countdown continues Trends will keep an eye on how NASA’s selection do over the coming months. In the meantime go to now to find out how to make your music count.
