Mel Gibson to not make a notable cameo in The Hangover 2

Recently we posted a story confirmed that crazyman Mel Gibson would be making a hilarious cameo in the Hangover sequel. Everything seemed all fine and dandy, but director Todd Phillips came out publicly to announce the cast and crew did not support bringing Gibson onto the set.

What happened?

On the Comedy Death-Ray podcast (hosted by Scott Aukerman), Zach Galifianakis stopped by to talk life and comedy. The interview was going well until Aukerman questioned Galifianakis’ filming schedule. Apparently Galifianakis has turned down several projects on moral ground as of late:

“… A movie you’re acting in, you don’t have a lot of control — you just show up and vomit your lines out. I’m not the boss. I’m in a deep protest right now with a movie I’m working on, up in arms about something. But I can’t get the guys to [listen] … I’m not making any leeway.”

Aukerman then asked if he was referring to the Hangover sequel, but got cut off.

“It has something to do with a movie I’m working on, yeah. I’ll tell you about it later. It’s very frustrating.”

Only a week later and now Gibson has been removed from the movie.

What do you think? Was the public displeasure of Gibson what drove the studio to remove the cameo? If the information of Gibson joining the production was kept secret, would he have stayed in? Was it the cast and crew’s influence or was it the overwhelming displeasure in the internet forums?

Tell us what you think!

I guess from an actors point of view, if I would want to make a good film and a lot of money and be respected for that film, I would not want Mel Gibson to eff that up for me. He might not be a racist or anti-semitic, but I think the cast had a lot to do with Mel’s cameo being removed. I definitely think the crew has much pull on what is going to be presented to the public. That’s my two cents.
