Dave Brubeck turns 90 and celebrates

[lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]Dave Brubeck [/lastfm]is a legacy. While you won’t hear his music on many rock stations today, “Take Five” was at the top of the pop, rock, and jazz charts nearly 50 years ago. Now that Dave Brubeck has turned 90, we think it’s high time JACK FM and it’s listeners pay the man the respect he deserves.

It was a late winter’s night in New York as Dave Brubeck struggled to the stage in a crowded Blue Note jazz club. Smiles packed every table and bar stool as the composer reunited with his piano, busting out a Duke Ellington medley in loving memory of his “favorite jazz composer, pianist, musician and friend.” The sold-out event consisted of an entire evening’s worth of  Brubeck originals and standards, spanning the near-70-year career of the Jazz legend.

Fans were afraid the musician would not make the gig as Brubeck underwent surgery only a month before. Spending just over two weeks in the hospital as doctors performed heart surgery to install a pacemaker, Brubeck himself wasn’t sure if he would be feeling well enough to perform again:

“It’s the love of the music and the love of being with the group because we have such a great time. I could kind of not work so hard anymore, but that might be a bad thing. My personal doctor said, `You know, Dave, when you start playing things start looking up, so I don’t advise you to stop. You need to play.'”

Once in rehab, his manager, Russell Gloyd, brought him an electric piano to play. His recovery quickened, his mood brightened,  and Brubeck told Gloyd he wouldn’t miss the show.

He celebrates his 90th birthday today, among friends and family. Together in their Connecticut home, four generations of the Brubeck family will gather to watch the Turner Classic Movies broadcast of “Dave Brubeck: In His Own Sweet Way,” a brand spanking new documentary, catered straight to the Legend of Jazz himself.
