Wizard of Oz remakes all over the place

by Jordy Altman

That’s right – Seven.

With the surging popularity of a hit musical, Wicked has breathed a new life into Dorothy and her crew. Wicked open on Broadway back in 2003 but has only gained momentum with national and overseas tours, and more Tony nominations and awards than Kansas has tornadoes.

Now there are seven different Oz remakes in the works – everything from stop-motion animation to a script written by Darren Lemke of the Shrek franchise.

The remake that has caught our attention the most is a new reimagination called Oz Wars, a feature directed by The Corpse Bride co-director Mike Johnson and produced by Vanguard Films. guaranteed to be as dark as any Tim Burton movie, Oz Wars will be, “an animated action-adventure story, but unlike most animated films, it’s not just for kids. The Land of Oz will be reimagined using stop-motion to create a world that’s dark, slick, sexy and dangerous.”

Other Oz films include (but are not limited to)

– Sam Raimi and Robert Downey Jr‘s Oz: The Great And Powerful

Drew Barrymore‘s Surrender Dorothy

– A potential remake of the original 1939 film

– A film adaptation of the musical Wicked

– An untitled script by Todd McFarlane

Oz, written by Shrek Forever After‘s Darren Lemke

Damn. That’s a lot of Toto. We’re going to go ahead and guess that by the end of these movies, people will know where to find Oz. Finding Kansas, on the other hand, will still be a difficult task for most people.
