2 dimensions were never enough for us.

The LG Optimus 3D made waves at the Mobile World Congress when it was announced. A glasses-free 3D experience coupled with powerful hardware and 4G speeds – it was only a matter of time before this phone washed up on our shores.

AT&T announced recently that they’d be releasing the handset on their network in the near future, calling it now the LG Thrill 3D. We don’t know whether or not this 3D fad is going to stick around, but if companies keep putting out good looking products like this that offer a glasses-free 3D experience, well, we may just have to pick one of these bad boys up to see if it’s worth it’s weight.

The only apparent downside to this phone is it appears it will be shipping with Android 2.2 (Froyo) rather than the newer Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). AT&T promises an upgrade to 2.3, however, and aside from that shortcoming the specs on this phone certainly don’t disappoint:

  • Features the latest nVidia Tegra 2 Dual-Core processor
  • 4G Connectivity
  • 4.3″ Stereoscopic Display
  • Dual 5 Mega pixel stereoscopic camera for taking 3D pictures and video
  • 8 GB Internal Storage, expandable with included 8 GB SD card
No release date has been announced as of yet, but for those of you interested in reading more, take a look at AT&T’s press release on the next page.

From AT&T’s newsroom:

“LG Thrill 4G The LG Thrill 4G will be exclusive to AT&T customers and reach AT&T stores in the coming months. Running the first dual-core, dual-channel 1 GHz processor in the U.S. and based on the Android 2.2 platform, LG Thrill 4G will be among the first to deliver a glasses-free 3D experience to U.S. customers and will allow users to shoot 3D video and 3D stills with the dual 5-megapixel stereoscopic camera. In addition to apps and games from Android Market, LG Thrill 4G will offer 3D content via the “LG 3D Space,” which houses 3D games, video clips and images for quick, convenient access. Preloaded with 16 GB of memory (8 GB onboard plus an 8 GB MicroSD card), the LG Thrill 4G will record 3D video at 720p resolution and 2D at 1080p quality. The smartphone will be able to play video back in high definition through the HDMI-out port on the device or stream content wirelessly through DLNA technology.”

AT&T is on to something here, the specs on this phone are excellent and if the glasses-free 3D translates well then AT&T may have a winner. The LG Thrill 3D won’t be the only 3D phone on the block for long though as HTC has recently announced the HTC Evo 3D.

Will more developers follow suit? Only time will tell.
