Gotta turn it on before you can work it.

Wanna know the best part about the Man Cave? It’s the one and only place you can go to escape (besides here, but alas – not a Man Cave). And sometimes all you need is a nice pair of headphones to break free. That’s where the Apple iPod comes in.

With so many apps and movies and music to download, can can anyone know where to start? What’s the best way to fill 64 gigs?

That’s where we come in. We’ll show you how to maximize your iPod – because you can’t spell iPod without Jack FM.

Now that most bands have their entire catalog digitized on iTunes, we thought it’d be pretty easy to fill up all 64 gig on your new-school Walkman. It’s not as easy as it looks.

Math is involved. Crap.

  • 1 CD ~ 0.07 GB (gigabytes)

Let’s see if we can figure this out together…

Music! Music! Music!

Perhaps iPods are known best for their music capabilities. The iPod will store all of your music and sort it by artist, album, playlist, or song title.

So we took a look at the libraries for 27 of our favorite bands and added their studio album discographies together.

Well, our music library is settled. What else can the iPod hold?

Apps! Apps! Apps!

The iTunes Store has thousands of different apps for your perusal. Everything from Rats on skateboards, media players, text messengers, rope cutting games… the list goes on. Whatever your fancy may be, somebody out there created an app for that.

App file sizes are slightly larger than music files.

If you downloaded the Top 10 Apps in the United States

22 Countries x Top 10 = 220 Apps

220 Apps = 8.8 GB

22 GB – 8.8 GB = 13.2 GB left to fill

Looks like we have enough apps… What else can the iPod hold?

Photos! Photos! Photos!

Yes! The iPod will even store your photos. Take a photo from the road with your iPod’s camera or upload a gallery from your computer. Photos take up little-to-no space. Perusing your photos is the perfect time waster for long stays in a Waiting Room.

Let’s use our lovely iPod Lady as a unit of measurement…

So, if you had 1,024,000 pictures, it would only take up a fraction of your iPod’s storage capacity. Not too shabby!

But that still leaves 12.2 GB left to fill…

Movies! Movies! Movies!

Last but not least, your brand new iPod is also a personal movie theater. Road trippers rejoice! Now you can watch Nigel Tufnel while quoting him at the same time!

If movies take up about 2 GB apiece, we have enough room left for 6 movies. Here are our favorite iPod movie picks.

Comedy – The Big Lebowski

Sci-Fi A Clockwork Orange

Music –This Is Spinal Tap!

Thriller – Fight Club

Sports – Field Of Dreams

Adult – Hustler’s Untrue Hollywood Stories

And there you have it!
