Jani Lane, lead singer of [lastfm link_type=”similar_artist_radio”]Warrant[/lastfm], (born John Kennedy Oswald, February 1, 1964) has been found dead.  Initial reports indicate his body was NOT thrown in the wishing well.

My sources at this point are reporting that “Lane was found dead at a Comfort Inn hotel in Woodland Hills, California on August 11, 2011. The official cause of death has not yet been released.“  By the way, my “sources” happen to be the tenth comment on a friend’s Facebook status update.

The two songs that most people remember Warrant for are the power ballad “Heaven” and the Strip Club anthem “Cherry Pie.”  Lane had always felt that Cherry Pie was a double edged sword, giving the band fame, but overshadowing many of their other songs.  Said Lane on VH1’s HEAVY: The Story Of Metal – Episode 3: Looks That Kill:

“I could shoot myself in the f***ing head for writing that song.”

Wow!  That’s an awesome quote!

Unfortunately, the quote is not quite fair to Lane.  He later stated-

“Can I clear the air on that? They [VH1 producers] just caught me on a bad day. It was a bad moment — I was going through a divorce, my mom had just passed away, all this stuff was going on — and they sit me down in a chair and wanna start grilling me with questions, and I didn’t wanna be there, so…You know, push that interview to the side, I’m happy as a clam to have written a song that is still being played and still dug by so many people. It’s hard enough to write a song, let alone one that sticks around.”

While it’s nice to know that Lane didn’t hate the song that helped make him Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich, I would rather remember Jani Lane with a song that kicked much more ass.  So here’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin-

R.I.P., Jani.
