First, the good news. That there picture is of an Los Angeles Kings ice girl bent over kissing the ice after the Kings won the Stanley Cup last season. It has nothing to do with this story, so enjoy the picture for a few minutes before reading the bad news.

Done? Okay, now the bad news. She may as well be kissing the season goodbye. If the Mayans have it their way, the LA Kings will be the final NHL team to claim the Stanley Cup. That’s because the NHL announced Monday that all hockey games through December 30th have been cancelled.

The season was scheduled to start October 11, but the NHL and the NHL Players Association (NHLPA) have yet to sign a new collective bargaining agreement. In simple terms, no agreement = no hockey. Talks, however, are set to resume again Wednesday, according to ESPN.

You may remember the same thing happened to the NBA last season. Owners and players failed to reach an agreement as well, resulting in a lockout. They eventually came to terms, salvaging 66 out the normal 82 game season.

But while the NBA lockout resulted in the loss of 480 regular season games, after yesterday’s announcement, the total NHL games lost is already at 526, or 43% of the season.

It’s looking grim for Hockey fans. Maybe the Mayans were on to something… We’ll keep you posted.
