Diving at night seems like a dangerous prospect in California waters when sharks are out there chillin’ in the shadows, waiting for something juicy and bloody to flop into the water like a steak in a lion’s cage.

But brave souls like Rick Coleman do it anyway and as a reward they get cute little visitors to talk about for years to come.

Coleman’s spirit animal du jour was a baby sea lion that hoped onto his kayak, at first scaring him, and then worrying him, until the sea lion pup followed him to shore and warmed up on the sand for a little bit until he went back into the ocean.

“At the end of a night dive I had quite the surprise when a very cute baby sea lion jumped on my kayak,” said Coleman on his Youtube page. “Was the sea lion pup escaping a shark in the area? Was he cold? Or was he just playing around? In any case, it looks like I now have a new kayaking buddy.”
