A Brief History Of Video Games

With E3 starting this week, we thought we’d take a trip down memory lane and honor the video games that made gaming what it is today. There have been so many titles and characters that have shaped the industry throughout the decades that it’s impossible to name them all. These are just a small handful of some of the ones we can think of. Let us know which others deserved to be mentioned!

The Originals: The games that started the revolution

Pong: The first popular video game. Archaic by today’s standards, groundbreaking when it first came out

Pac-Man/Miss Pac-Man: This power couple was the king of the arcade. Again, simple in concept, but ate up hours of your time and quarters

Donkey Kong: Another titan of the arcade, this little gem introduced the world to Mario

The Old School: When video game consoles like the NES took over children’s lives in the 80’s, these games led the way

Super Mario Bros: You can’t say enough about the influence of Mario Bros. This is the series that built Nintendo

Zelda/Metroid: For the first time, gamers explored whole worlds on their terms, which at the time was unheard of

Tetris: Quite possibly the most addictive game ever made. Proof that you don’t need big-time graphics to create a classic

Yesteryear: The 90’s took gaming to a whole new level

Doom: Technically not true 3D, Doom nonetheless introduced the world to the first person shooter, and scared the living daylights out of you

Street Fighter II: the birthplace of fighting games in the 90’s

Mortal Kombat: With it’s ultra-gory “Finish Him!” sequences, this took fighting games–and video game violence–to a whole new level

Final Fantasy series: Though technically birthed in the 80’s, the Final Fantasy series hit “Cloud” 9 during the 90’s. It set the standard in RPG

GoldenEye 007: Doom may have scared you, but GoldenEye mastered multi-player mayhem.

The 2000’s

Halo: With its advanced physics engine, story telling, and multi-player (including XBOX Live), it ushered in the modern era of gaming

GTA series: As children of the 80’s and 90’s grew up, their games grew up with them. Saying it was controversial doesn’t due GTA justice

World of Warcraft/The Sims: The games that made MMORPG a thing. They are so immersive that people literally lived double lives inside their walls

Guitar Hero/Rock Band: Thanks to these titles with their epic soundtracks, video games became cool

Madden NFL series: Madden NFL has become so advanced, it has accurately predicted 8 of the last 10 Super Bowl winners. It is the undeniable champ of sports games, and blurs the lines between video games and actual simulations
