Happy New Year! There are a lot of things about 2014 that we here at JACK weren’t aware of (like how did 2014 actually start? Oh the tequila…), namely, some of the new laws across this great country of ours that came into effect at the stroke of midnight.

After some searching, we’ve made a list of some of the cooler laws you should be aware of. Just make sure you don’t break them.

Delaware: The possession or sale of shark fins is now banned. No soup for you! (USA Today)

Illinois: Teens under the age of 18 are prohibited from using tanning salons. Because who wants to look like this? (USA Today)

California: The DMV can now issue digital plates. Pretty cool, right? (LA Times)

California: Even cooler, transgender students can now participate in sports and use facilities based on their gender rather than their sex. (LA Times)

Colorado: Possibly the best law EVER, Colorado allows the sale of marijuana for recreational purposes. (USA Today)

Nationwide: The Energy Independence and Security Act was actually passed in 2007, but it was implemented in stages. After phasing out 100-watt and 75-watt incandescent bulbs, 2014 marks the beginning of the end for 40 and 60-watt incandescent light bulbs, which represents over 50% of the overall light bulb market. Nationwide: January 1st was the first day of Obamacare coverage. Under this law, vending machines will now have one year to post the calories of the snacks they’re selling. (LA Weekly)
