Seriously, how cool would this be? Imagine that your dog could actually talk to you. And we don’t mean in an interpretive, Dog Whisperer kind of way; we mean with actual words forming sentences, literally giving your dog a voice.

That’s what The Nordic Society for Invention and Discovery, the brains behind No More Woof, is trying to achieve, and they claim they’re almost there.

Existing right now only as a working prototype, No More Woof fits over your dog’s head and, using EEG technology and microcomputers, is able to “analyze thought patterns and spell them out in human language using a loudspeaker.”

Imagine your dog being able to tell you what he’s feeling, why he’s barking, or if he needs to go to the bathroom. Sounds amazing, right?

Now before you praise the miracle that is modern science, No More Woof stresses that it is currently a work in progress, and that the science of reading your dog’s mind is still in its infancy:

Hold in mind that this first round is partly novelty science. The brainwaves differ quiet a lot from different races as well as individual dogs. However it IS possible to detect some common patterns and we have no doubt that in the future this technology will open up a vast new era of communication between dogs and humans, or animals in general and humans.

Right now we are only scraping the surface of possibilities; the project is only in its cradle. And to be completely honest, the first version will be quite rudimentary. But hey, the first computer was pretty crappy too.

No More Woof is currently in version 3.2, so they have made some progress. Future versions are looking to expand the number of thought patterns No More Woof can decipher, add more languages (currently No More Woof speaks English only), and even outfitting the device with different voices. Maybe one day in the not so distant future, talking dogs will be the norm, or so we hope.
