With the three-day Memorial Day weekend finally here, the long lazy days of summer are officially beginning. While the plan for most is to fire up the cue at home or maybe head to Sin City for some poolside debauchery, maybe red meat and fake boobs aren’t your thing. If boardshorts and cans of beer isn’t for you this weekend, check the quick list of options in and around your area below. From a massive cake cutting to artwalks aplenty, there is a hefty set of alternatives for your holiday weekend.
CATS: CAT CULT AT AS ISSUED
We found it. For years the idea of building an entire street art exhibit around thematic cat concepts seemed an impossible dream, but now… running for an entire month, ‘Cat Cult’ features individual work from collaborators Nic Nak and Atlas, Surge, Kayle Leogrande, Sharktoof, Augustine Kofie, Neko Burke, Letter Cat Signs, Honkey Kong, Josh Damnit, Corrina Martinez and Black P***y. Treat your eyes to some outside the box thinking and maybe land something cool to put on the wall of your studio apartment.

BUBBLES: BUBBLE RUN AT ORANGE COUNTY GREAT PARK
There have been an influx of themed fun run events nationwide, but some of them just sound cool. Atypically a great way to contribute to a charity or just a rad way to get some exercise in, Irivine’s Great Park hosts the 5k Bubble Run. Every kilometer “bubble-teers” (see how that works?) lay down a massive coating of colored bubbles across the field of runners. While the kids would lose their minds, it would be safe to say adults would be just as stoked.

Window shopping just got a bit more interesting.

ART: SOBECA ARTwalk AT THE CAMP
Already a destination for those weary of typical malls and shopping locales, both The Lab and The Camp serve as some of the hippest spots in Orange County. Offering discerning retail and restaurant options, the tandem hosts a monthly artwalk the last Tuesday of every month that features local artists boasting a multitude of mediums. Eat, drink, shop, and scope – a perfect date night choice.

BERRIES: 56th ANNUAL GARDEN GROVE STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL
This three day festival includes all the standard amenities and entertainment – live music, guest speakers, carnival games and rides for the kiddos. What this festival has that others don’t – the world largest strawberry shortcake that is cut ceremoniously to kick off the weekend. This thing feeds 1,000 people. The parade is Saturday and there are some celebrities showing up, but let’s not overlook this massive cake thing.
