A long time ago in a city called “Los Angeles” a form of hard rock was born. Hair Metal was the product of many bands listening to too much Van Halen, mixed in with the New York Dolls, Thin Lizzy and T. Rex.
Its claim to fame was boys with giant teased hair, perhaps a little makeup chased down with way too much partying – especially at the Rainbow on the Sunset Strip.
You can thank the movement for spawning Guns ‘n’ Roses, who went on to create one of the greatest rock albums of all time, Appetite for Destruction. The ultimate irony here is that the band is largely credited with hammering the last nail into Hair Metal’s coffin, which ultimately paved the way for Nirvana to get everyone to exchange their rouge and hairspray for flannel.
But despite the fact that the genre produced some very catchy pop music, looking back on these 5 videos (and take it from us: there are many, many more like them) still makes us wonder just what people were thinking.
