‘Hunger Games’ Prequel Movie in the Works

April 22, 2020

The odds are ever in your favor if you were hoping for some more "Hunger Games."

A prequel movie to blockbuster franchise has been given the green light based on author Suzanne Collins’ upcoming novel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snake,” reported Variety.

Francis Lawrence, who directed the sequels “Catching Fire,” “Mockingjay Part 1,” and “Mockingjay Part 2,” will return to helm the upcoming feature adaptation.

Collins, who wrote the original Young Adult trilogy of novels, will write the screenplay alongside “Catching Fire” screenwriter Michael Arndt.

While no casting decisions have been revealed, it’s unlikely Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence will return to the franchise as heroine Katniss Everdeen since the prequel takes place approximately 64 years prior to the onset of the original “Hunger Games” movie.

“The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” will center around 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow, decades before becoming the authoritarian President Snow of Panem, which was portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the later films.

According to a synopsis, the handsome teenager is tasked with being a mentor at the 10th annual Hunger Games. While initially hopeful that the gig would offer his family new opportunities, Snow’s dreams are dashed upon learning he will be mentoring a young tribute from impoverished District 12, which is also the future home of Katniss Everdeen.

Based on Collins’ 2008 novel of the same name, “The Hunger Games” premiered in 2012 starring Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. The dystopian thriller earned nearly $700 million worldwide.

It spawned three sequels, “Catching Fire” in 2013, “Mockingjay - Part 1” in 2014, and “Mockingjay - Part 2” in 2015.  The entire film franchise earned nearly $3 billion at the global box office.

On Friday, April 17th, fans can stream the original “The Hunger Games” for free on Fandango’s Movieclips YouTube Page and Lionsgate’s YouTube Page starting at 9 p.m. EST.

While there is no release date yet for “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snake” movie, the novel comes out on May 19th.
